Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. DRUM VR runs in your headset’s web browser. Open the page and tap Enter VR.

Which VR headsets work?

DRUM VR is built on WebXR and tested on Meta Quest. Other headsets with a WebXR browser and tracked controllers should work too. See the headset guide for the full list and what we have tested.

Is DRUM VR free?

Yes. There is nothing to buy right now, and you do not need an account.

Do I need an account?

No. Your settings and saved kits stay in your browser on that device.

Where are my settings and saved kits stored?

In your browser, on the device you play on. They are not sent to a server and do not sync between devices. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Can I play left-handed?

Yes. Apply the Left-handed preset, or flip your own kit. By default the hi-hat button follows whichever side the hi-hat is on, so your left and right hands never get swapped.

Can I play sitting down?

Yes. Apply the Seated preset, or use Auto height to set the kit from where your head is.

There are no pedals. How do the kick and hi-hat work?

The kick plays when you press a button, a grip by default. The hi-hat opens while you hold a button, a trigger by default. You can choose the button and the hand in Controls > Buttons.

Why do the drums sound synthesized?

The sounds are generated in your browser, which keeps the page small and the response quick.

Is there delay between a hit and the sound?

We designed hit detection and audio to keep delay low, and there is a timing assist setting that plays each sound slightly early. The Info tab in the menu shows an estimate for your device. Wireless audio devices can add their own delay.

How do I hear my drums over music from another app?

On Meta Quest, music from another app, such as a music app opened in its own window, keeps playing while you play DRUM VR. We have tested this with Spotify. DRUM VR cannot control another app’s volume, so set the music with that app’s own volume control, and use Drum boost or Master volume in the Sound tab to bring the drums up.

Can I record what I play?

Yes. Tap Record on the menu’s home screen and start playing. Opening the menu stops the recording and saves it. You can replay a take inside DRUM VR, and download its audio as a WAV file from DrumVR.com/recordings when you open that page in the same browser on your headset. Recordings include the sound DRUM VR plays, not music from other apps, and they stay on your device. See cookies and storage.

Can I play along to a beat?

Yes. The rhythm helper plays a click or a simple drum pattern at the tempo you choose, so you can play your own part on top. Open the Rhythm tab in the menu.

Can I try it on my phone or computer?

You can read this site anywhere, but playing needs a VR headset with tracked controllers. If you are on a computer or phone, you can email yourself the link and open it on your headset.

Does DRUM VR use cookies?

Only if you allow analytics. DRUM VR itself sets no cookies. It saves your setup in your browser’s local storage, and you can turn that off or delete it. If you accept analytics, Google Analytics sets cookies, and you can change your choice any time with Cookie settings in the footer. See cookies and storage.

Is it safe to use?

VR needs a clear play area, regular breaks, and a comfortable volume. Stop if you feel unwell. Read the safety guidance before you play.
