5 basic drum beats for beginners
Most songs are built from a few simple patterns. Learn these and you can already play along with a lot of music.
How to read the charts
Each chart is one bar of four beats. The numbers are beats and the “&” between them is the half-beat. An x means hit, a dash means rest. Count out loud: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &.
1. The basic rock beat
The hi-hat plays every half-beat, the bass drum plays on 1 and 3, and the snare plays on 2 and 4. This is the pattern behind countless songs.
Count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Hi-hat: x x x x x x x x Snare: - - x - - - x - Kick: x - - - x - - -
2. Four on the floor
The bass drum plays on every beat while the hi-hat plays the half-beats between. It is the steady pulse of dance music.
Count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Hi-hat: - x - x - x - x Snare: - - x - - - x - Kick: x - x - x - x -
3. Half-time
The snare moves to beat 3 only, which makes the groove feel slower and heavier even though the hi-hat keeps the same speed.
Count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Hi-hat: x x x x x x x x Snare: - - - - x - - - Kick: x - - x - - - -
4. Shuffle
A shuffle splits each beat into three, then skips the middle one for a swinging, rolling feel. Count each beat as “1-trip-let”.
Beat: 1 . . 2 . . 3 . . 4 . . Hi-hat: x . x x . x x . x x . x Snare: . . . x . . . . . x . . Kick: x . . . . . x . . . . .
5. A simple click to start with
If these feel like too much, play just one drum on every beat to a steady click. Getting your timing even matters more than playing fast.
Tips for practicing
- Start slow, around 60 to 80 beats per minute, and only speed up when it feels easy.
- Count out loud so your brain locks onto the pulse.
- Keep the hi-hat steady while the other hands and feet move around it.
- Practice with a metronome or a backing beat, not just by feel.
Practice these in VR
DRUM VR’s rhythm helper has patterns for all of these: Rock beat, Four on floor, Half-time, Shuffle, and a plain click. Pick one, set a slow tempo, and play your own part on top.
Try it: in the menu, open the Rhythm tab, choose a pattern, turn on Count-in, and press Start rhythm.
